There is crossover, because both are based on a trusted, safe relationship with a professional partner.
Coaching is therapeutic, but it’s not therapy: Coaches don't diagnose or treat, yet they can guide you to your own right path.
There are also distinct differences in areas of focus: Therapy is often focused on healing past traumas, whereas coaching uses your strengths to move forward. Also, coaching addresses dysfunctional patterns and builds skills to develop healthier habits. Learn more about the differences between coaching and therapy from the Kresser Institute.

Making change that lasts takes time and depends on motivation and individual factors, like readiness and support. Many people report increased hope and confidence after the first session, and sustainable change can occur after three months. Many find longer time commitments helpful. It's important to talk with your coach about your time commitment so you can set reasonable expectations for your work together.
Right from the beginning your coach will want to know what is important to you. Together you will define an ideal future of where you’d like to be, and set goals to get you there.
During each one-on-one session, together you’ll explore what's happening, reflect on recent successes, reframe failures in a judgement-free zone, and adjust goals to make sure you continue to move forward. You will learn strategies and access resources to support you in developing new habits. Your coach will brainstorm with you, listen deeply to your ideas, and work with you to address obstacles ahead of time.
Most of the time, you will leave each session with action steps you create with the support of your coach. In between sessions, your coach will be available to check in with you as needed to help you stay accountable and on track.
In the end, you will have the confidence to maintain your new behavior. The goal of coaching is to not have a coach. Eventually, you will have the confidence and independence to live your healthiest, best life. Watch How Coaching Works to understand more about how it works.
