Get a letter of medical necessity for your HSA/FSA at Lemonaid Health

How to use your HSA/FSA at Crunch: quick answers

  • Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) hold funds for medical expenses. If exercise helps your condition, it may qualify as a medical expense. If so, you can use your HSA/FSA funds for fitness fees.
  • To use your HSA/FSA at Crunch, you need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). In this document, a clinician explains how exercise helps your condition. This makes exercise medically necessary under IRS rules.
  • With Lemonaid Health, you can take an online LMN fitness consultation. A clinician will review the consultation, and if you qualify, they’ll write your LMN.

Lemonaid Health believes that exercising for less pain, better mobility, and greater ease shouldn’t break the bank.

That’s why we’re helping you use your HSA/FSA at Crunch Fitness. Memberships for this “no-judgments” gym start at just $9.99 per month. Or upgrade your membership to get personal training sessions, fitness classes, at-home workouts, and more.

Here, learn how you can use your FSA or HSA for gym membership. Then, unlock those funds for Crunch with a convenient online consultation.

First, how do HSA and FSA accounts help you save?

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are tax-advantaged savings accounts.

Here’s how they work:

  • You pay less in taxes: Deposited funds are not included in your taxable income. Deposit $1,000 into your HSA/FSA. That’s $1,000 less that’s taxed!
  • They boost your spending: Deposit $100 into your checking account. If you pay 20% in taxes, you only keep $80. Deposit that $100 into your HSA or FSA, and you keep the $100. This gives you 20 extra bucks to spend at Crunch!
  • You earn tax-free interest: With some HSA accounts, the balance can earn interest. This growth is also not subject to income tax. So any extra money stays in the account for future use.

When can you use your HSA/FSA for fitness costs?

You can only use tax-free HSA/FSA funds for medical expenses. HSA withdrawal rules specify which items automatically qualify. These include things like copays, medications, and first-aid supplies.

Things used for general wellness—like exercise—only count if they serve a medical purpose. If you exercise to manage a condition, the costs can become FSA- or HSA-eligible. But a clinician must explain the connection in a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

With that letter, exercise becomes a medical expense. You can then use your HSA/FSA at Crunch. If you get audited, the LMN proves you’ve used your pre-tax funds properly.

How to use your HSA/FSA at Crunch

With Lemonaid and Crunch, you can get a Letter of Medical Necessity online with a convenient consultation.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Take an online consultation: Visit Crunch’s page on Lemonaid. Then answer a brief health questionnaire. The $25 membership fee covers your LMN fitness consultation, clinician review, and letter.
  2. Wait for review: A clinician will review your health information. If appropriate, they’ll write your LMN. Once it’s ready, we’ll upload your letter to your patient portal and email you a link.
  3. Pay at Crunch: Use your debit or credit card to buy a Crunch Fitness membership. Save your receipts!
  4. File for reimbursement: Log in to your HSA/FSA app or website. Find the claims or reimbursement section. Upload your LMN and Crunch receipts. Once approved, your HSA/FSA administrator will transfer the amount into your chosen account.
  5. Crunch and repeat: Your letter is valid for 12 months. Submit the letter with new Crunch receipts during this period. You can’t submit receipts dated before the letter was issued.
  6. Get a new LMN: We’ll email you a week or two before your letter expires. Come back to Lemonaid to take a new consultation. Update your information for clinician review. When ready, you’ll get a link for your new LMN.

How much can you save at Crunch with your HSA/FSA?

Most people get the entire receipt amount reimbursed. How much you save depends on your income tax bracket.

For example, if you’re single and make $75,000 a year, your income probably falls into the 22% tax bracket. Deposit $1,000 into your HSA, and you save about $220. That amount easily covers your Crunch membership for the entire year!
