Get a letter of medical necessity for your HSA/FSA at Lemonaid Health

How to pay for Orangetheory with HSA/FSA funds: quick answers

  • You can use HSA/FSA funds only for medical expenses. But some people exercise for general wellness. So fitness costs don’t automatically qualify as a medical expense.
  • You may be able to use your HSA/FSA for Orangetheory if exercise helps your condition. But you need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). In this letter, a clinician details how exercise helps your condition. This qualifies the expense as medically necessary.
  • With Lemonaid Health, take a convenient consultation to get a Letter of Medical Necessity online. A clinician will review your information. If you qualify, they’ll write your official letter.

Orangetheory offers science-backed, technology-tracked, coach-inspired group workouts. If you exercise to manage a health condition, your HSA/FSA may help you save on the cost.

Read on to learn how Orangetheory Fitness supports your health. Then, follow our guide to unlock your HSA/FSA funds for fitness fees with an online consultation.

But first, how does Orangetheory support health?

Orangetheory combines rowing, treadmill work, and strength training into an energizing 60-minute workout

During the workout, a heart rate monitor helps you spend 12–20 minutes in the Orange Zone. In this zone, you boost metabolism, burn fat, and improve cardiovascular fitness. Over time, this supports better health.

During each class, Orangetheory coaches offer motivation and support.

Most classes split time between three stations:

  • The floor: Use different equipment combinations. If you have an injury or illness, your coach will modify the movements so you train safely.
  • The treadmill: Vary pace and incline to build strength and cardio. Amp it up to push harder or scale it back to recover.
  • Rowing: Engage specific muscle groups while rowing for total-body conditioning over time.

Is Orangetheory Fitness good for beginners or those with medical conditions?

Orangetheory packs a guided full-body workout into each 60-minute class. That means you don’t have to plan your workout. Just show up, follow along, listen to your body, get advice, and have fun!

Each location creates a class schedule to meet members’ needs. Some offer workouts as early as 5am and as late as 10pm. So there’s usually a class available for busy parents and those with packed work schedules.

Members of all ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities create a safe space where everyone is welcome. If you have an injury or illness, your coach will set boundaries to encourage safe, sustainable growth.

Is Orangetheory HSA-eligible or FSA-eligible?

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are “tax-advantaged” accounts. That means you don’t pay income tax on money you deposit or withdraw for healthcare costs.

People often use HSA/FSA funds to pay for copays, medications, and first aid. These automatically qualify as medical costs because they’re solely used for medical purposes.

Exercise can be done for general wellness, so it doesn’t automatically qualify. If you exercise to help a condition, fitness costs may be HSA-eligible or FSA-eligible. But you need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). This letter details why exercise is medically necessary. It makes exercise costs a medical expense, so you can use your HSA/FSA at Orangetheory.

How to get a Letter of Medical Necessity online for Orangetheory

You don’t need to schedule an in-person appointment. With Lemonaid Health, qualifying patients can get a letter online with a convenient consultation.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Take an online consultation: Visit Orangetheory’s page on Lemonaid Health and complete a brief health questionnaire. Your $25 membership fee covers the consultation, clinician review, and your LMN.
  2. Wait for review: A clinician will review your information. This usually takes one business day. If appropriate, they’ll write your letter. When it’s ready, we’ll email you a link to find it in your patient portal.
  3. Pay at Orangetheory: Pay for your membership or class pack—and save the receipt!
  4. File for reimbursement: Log in to your HSA/FSA account and navigate to claims or reimbursement. Upload your LMN and Orangetheory receipts. Once approved, they’ll transfer the amount into your chosen account.
  5. Reuse the letter: Your LMN is valid for 12 months. You can resubmit it with new receipts during this period. You cannot submit receipts dated before the letter.
  6. Get a new LMN: We’ll email you a week or two before your letter expires and your membership fee renews. Take a consultation, update your information, and get your new letter!

How much can you save at Orangetheory with HSA/FSA funds?

Most people can reimburse the entire cost of their membership or class pack. Your savings depend on your income tax bracket, which is determined by your annual income.

For example, if you’re single and make $60,000, you may be in the 22% tax bracket. Deposit $4,000 into your HSA/FSA. Once it’s deducted from your taxable income, you’ll save around $1,000 in tax payments.

That leaves you more to spend on medical expenses—and Orangetheory Fitness costs!
