Anytime Fitness and your HSA/FSA: quick answers
- Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) hold funds for medical expenses. You may be able to use your HSA/FSA for fitness if exercise helps your medical condition.
- To use your HSA/FSA at Anytime Fitness, you need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). In this document, a clinician explains how exercise helps your condition. This makes exercise medically necessary under IRS rules.
- With Lemonaid Health, you can take an online LMN consultation. A clinician will review your information. If you medically qualify, they’ll write your letter.
At Lemonaid Health, we love exercising for general health and wellness. We also appreciate how exercise supports medical conditions. But reducing pain, improving mobility, and easing anxiety shouldn’t stress your wallet.

First, how does an HSA/FSA help you save money?
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are tax-advantaged accounts. Set aside money for medical expenses, and you lower your taxable income.
Here’s how they work:
- You pay less in income taxes: The funds you deposit are not included in your taxable income. For example, a single person under 55 can deposit up to $4,400 into their HSA in 2026. If they pay 15% income tax and deposit $4,400, they’ll pay $660 less in taxes!
- They increase purchasing power: If you deposit $100 into your checking account and pay 15% in taxes, you’re left with $85 to spend! Deposit that $100 into your HSA/FSA, and you keep the $100!
- You earn tax-free interest: Some HSA accounts earn interest. Unlike other savings accounts, this growth is also not subject to income tax!

How to use your FSA or HSA for gym memberships and other fitness costs
HSA withdrawal rules detail which goods and services qualify as medical expenses. Items and services used only for medical purposes automatically qualify. You can always use your HSA/FSA for things like copays, medications, and first-aid tools.
Things used for both medical purposes and general wellness—like exercise—don’t automatically qualify. To make exercise costs FSA- or HSA-eligible, you need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).
In an LMN, a clinician explains how exercise helps your condition. With it, you can use your FSA or HSA for gym memberships and personal training fees. If you get audited, the LMN confirms you’ve used your HSA/FSA properly.
The problem? Scheduling an appointment and paying a copay for an LMN is a hassle. That’s why Lemonaid helps qualifying patients get a Letter of Medical Necessity online.

How much can you save on Anytime Fitness with HSA/FSA funds?
Most people get the entire receipt amount reimbursed. How much you save depends on your income tax bracket.
For example, if you’re single and make $80,000 a year, your income may fall into the 22% tax bracket. Deposit $4,400 into your HSA, and save about $1,000 in tax payments. Now you have more money for medical expenses, including Anytime Fitness fees!
