Get a letter of medical necessity for your HSA/FSA at Lemonaid Health

How to use your HSA/FSA at F45: quick answers

  • Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are tax-advantaged accounts. That means deposited funds and those used for medical costs are not subject to income tax. This puts extra money in your pocket to pay for healthcare costs.
  • You can use FSA or HSA funds for gym memberships if exercise helps you manage your medical condition. But first, you need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) to qualify the costs as medically necessary.
  • With Lemonaid Health, take an online consultation to get a Letter of Medical Necessity online. A clinician will review your information. If you qualify, they’ll write your letter, and we’ll store it in your patient portal.

Lemonaid Health helps you get effective, affordable treatment through convenient online consultations. But sometimes, exercise is the best treatment for asthma, anxiety, chronic pain, and other conditions.

That’s why we’ve partnered with F45 Training. This global fitness community brings people together to train hard for big health gains. Together, we’re making training more affordable for those with an HSA or FSA.

Here, you’ll learn how to use your HSA/FSA at F45 Training. Plus, how to get the document you need with a convenient online consultation—all without leaving home.

Why we love F45 Training

F45 Training classes combine functional fitness, high-intensity interval training, and circuit training. Classes in varying styles rotate weekly and tap into 5,000 different movements. So each full-body workout is fun and effective—and you never do the exact same workout twice!

Led by F45 Training coaches, the class follows the flow displayed on digital screens. All coaches are certified personal trainers. If you’re looking to get stronger, improve your mobility, or heal an injury, they’re ready to help.

How do Health Savings and Flexible Spending accounts work?

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are “tax-advantaged” accounts. You don’t pay income tax on money you deposit or use for medical expenses. If the account earns interest, that amount is also not taxed. This gives you more to spend on healthcare costs!

Think of it like this: If you pay around 15% in taxes, you owe $150 for every $1000 you earn. Deposit that $1,000 into your HSA/FSA, and you keep the full $1000!

When can you use your HSA/FSA for gym and fitness costs?

You can use pre-tax HSA/FSA money to pay for qualified medical expenses. Common qualified expenses include copays, medications, family planning tools, and vision care. You can always use your funds to pay for these under FSA and HSA withdrawal rules.

If something can be used for medical purposes or general wellness—like exercise—it may qualify. But you can’t just use your FSA or HSA for gym memberships and training fees.

To make exercise costs FSA- or HSA-eligible, you need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). In this document, a clinician details how exercise supports your medical condition. With it, you can use your funds for gym memberships, training fees, and more.

How to use your HSA/FSA funds for F45 Training

If exercise helps you manage a condition, F45 Training may qualify as a medical expense. Lemonaid makes it easy for qualified members to get a Letter of Medical Necessity online.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Take an online consultation: Go to F45 Training’s page on Lemonaid Health. Complete a brief health questionnaire. The $25 annual membership fee covers your consultation, clinician review, and LMN.
  2. Wait for review: A clinician will review your information. If appropriate, they’ll write your letter—usually within one business day. We’ll email you a secure link to the location in your patient portal.
  3. Pay at F45 Training: Pay for your classes with your debit or credit card—and save the receipt!
  4. File for reimbursement: Log in to your HSA/FSA app or website and find the claims or reimbursement section. Upload your letter and F45 Training receipts. Once approved, they’ll transfer the amount to your chosen account.
  5. Reuse as needed: Your letter is valid for 12 months. You can resubmit the letter with new receipts during this period. You can’t submit receipts dated before the letter’s date.
  6. Get a new letter: We’ll email you a week or two before it expires. Take a consultation to update your information and get a new letter!

How much can you save on F45 Training with your HSA/FSA?

When you submit your F45 Training receipts, you’ll most likely get the entire cost reimbursed. How much you’ll save depends on your income tax bracket—the percentage of your income you pay in taxes.

For example, if you’re single and make $60,000 a year, your income may fall into the 22% tax bracket. Deposit $4,000 into your HSA, and you could save about $880 in taxes. That gives you a lot more to spend on F45 Training costs!
