The shrinking of hair follicles (miniaturized), eventually leads to decreased hair coverage on the scalp. This shrinking is caused by the body's excessive response to hormones called androgens and is heavily influenced by genetics. It can start as early as the teenage years or later in life. In men specifically, it typically begins with a receding hairline or bald spots at the top of the head.
Yes, treatment can help slow or stop hair loss and even promote hair regrowth. It’s important to start treatment as early as possible for the best results. Without treatment, hair loss will continue. However, if the hair follicle loses attachment to the small muscle in the skin (the arrector pili muscle), hair loss can become permanent.
Finasteride and minoxidil require daily use for four to six months before any noticeable changes may be seen. Maximum results may take up to a year to manifest. It’s recommended to continue taking the medication for at least one full year, as long as there are no side effects, to determine if it’s working effectively for you. The effectiveness of these medications can vary between individuals. To maintain the benefits, it’s important to continue using them consistently. If discontinued, hair loss may resume.

Understand the potential risks of hair loss prescriptions. Finasteride is a pill that can treat hair loss. It’s approved by the FDA for treating the most common kind of hair loss in men. It's generally safe but it can also cause serious side effects, including but not limited to an allergic reaction, breast cancer, sexual dysfunction, and high-grade prostate cancer.
Most patients find that their problems with sexual function resolve when they stop taking the medicine. But a minority of patients find that their problems with sexual function may persist after stopping the medicine. Older patients may be at greater risk of this side effect impacting sexual function. Women of childbearing age shouldn’t take finasteride or touch broken tablets, as finasteride can cause birth defects.
